Wealth Building

Your Investment Journey: Ask the Right Questions

Investing is one of the surest ways to build wealth, but success lies in the strategy, not just the ticker symbol.

Before you commit your hard-earned capital, it is critical to understand why you are investing and how those choices fit into your broader financial landscape. Use these eight questions as your roadmap to a robust portfolio.

1. What is your ‘Why’?

Are you building long-term sustainable wealth or chasing quick wins? Identifying your motivation prevents emotional decisions like FOMO-driven crypto buys.

2. What is the Goal?

Goal-setting dictates the vehicle. Retirement savings suit an RA, while a house deposit works better in a unit trust or money market fund.

Timelines and Accessibility

Your investment horizon is perhaps the most critical factor in determining your risk level. Consider these two pillars:

  • ⏳ The 10-Year Rule: For long-term growth (10+ years), you can afford exposure to equities and property. For short-term needs (under 3 years), stick to lower-risk bonds and cash to avoid market volatility.
  • 🔓 The Accessibility Trade-off: Retirement Annuities (RAs) offer great tax breaks but lock your money until age 55. Balance your portfolio with discretionary investments for medium-term cash flow needs.

2026/2027 Tax Efficiency Check

Are you maximizing your deductions? For the current tax year:

  • Retirement Funds: Deduct up to 27.5% of your income (capped at R430,000 per year).
  • TFSA: Contribute up to R46,000 annually (R500,000 lifetime cap) with zero tax on growth or withdrawals.
  • Interest Exemptions: Under 65s enjoy R23,800 tax-free interest; Over 65s get R34,500.
  • CGT: The annual capital gains exclusion for individuals is now R50,000.

Understanding Risk Propensity

Everyone’s stomach for risk is different. Investing in a strategy that is too aggressive can lead to panic-selling during a dip. Conversely, being too conservative might mean you never reach your lifestyle objectives. A balanced strategy is one you can stick to, even when the markets get “noisy.”
