Investing in Young Minds: The FLSC Impact

From 150 schools to a national movement—how a five-minute speech is securing the financial futures of South African learners.

A National Milestone

The Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI) is proud to support the Financial Literacy Speech Competition (FLSC). Since its pilot in 2016, the FLSC has evolved into a powerhouse of financial education, reaching 5,500 participating learners in the 2023 cycle alone.

Implemented by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) and funded by the Financial Services Consumer Education Foundation, the project specifically targets Grade 11 learners in the commercial stream at non-fee paying schools (Quintiles 1 to 3).

The Competition Themes

Learners conduct in-depth research and present a five-minute speech on critical pillars of the economy, including:

  • Financial Planning & Investment
  • Consumer Protection & Rights
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Engaging with Financial Institutions

Life-Changing Rewards

The FLSC is more than just a contest; it is a gateway to tertiary education. The financial stakes are significant, rewarding both provincial and national excellence:

Placement Provincial Prize National Prize
1st Place R36,000 + R36,000 & R550k Bursary
2nd Place R18,000 + R18,000
3rd Place R9,000 + R9,000

Innovation in Adversity

While the pandemic halted progress in 2020, the FLSC pivoted to a hybrid model. This ensures that even in 2026, learners can engage through both digital research rounds and thrilling face-to-face finals. The FPI continues to contribute its expertise to this mission, with our members serving as professional adjudicators to ensure the highest standards of financial accuracy and merit.
