Banishing the Inner Critic
In a world of global turmoil, the most influential voice you hear is the one inside your own head. Here is how to make it a positive one.
We often focus on external stressors—media, global conflicts, or the lingering effects of the pandemic. However, the “little gremlin” on your shoulder whispering that you aren’t enough can be far more harmful. Continuous negative self-talk limits our success and damages our mental health. Changing this mindset starts with intentional action.
01. Notice & Pause
Become aware of the negativity. Write the thoughts down in a journal or on your phone. You cannot change what you cannot name. When you catch a self-insult, stop right there.
02. Fact vs. Opinion
Ask yourself: “Is this a fact?” Are you actually “terrible” at your job, or did you just make one mistake today? Don’t let vulnerable emotions dramatize your reality.
03. Be Your Own Friend
How would a best friend speak to you? They would offer sympathy and perspective, not insults. If you can’t shake a thought, verbalize it to a real friend—hearing it out loud often reveals how ridiculous the negativity is.
04. Embrace Growth
Adopt a “Growth Mindset.” Move from “I’m bad at this” to “I’m still learning.” Banishing perfectionism reduces fear and builds the confidence needed to achieve your goals.
“The positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.”
— Winston Churchill
