FSCA Financial Literacy Speech competition 2023

The Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI) is proud to support the Financial Literacy Speech Competition (FLSC) which started as a pilot project in Gauteng in 2016 and in 2019 developed into a national competition with profound impact on the lives of participating learners, their teachers, and their families across the country.

The primary objective of the FLSC is to promote financial literacy among learners by encouraging them to conduct in-depth research on selected financial topics and present their findings eloquently in a five-minute speech. The choice of themes included financial planning, consumer protection, consumer rights and responsibilities, entrepreneurship, and engaging with financial institutions.

The FLSC project is being implemented by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) and funded by the Financial Services Consumer Education Foundation. The FLSC targets Grade 11 learners from quintiles 1 to 3 (non-fee paying) schools, focusing on subjects in the Commercial stream. What started as a contest for 150 schools has now touched hundreds of schools, with a reach of 5500 learners participating in the 2023 competition.

The competition was cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, From 2021 the competition transitioned to a digital or hybrid format, ensuring learners could participate safely and effectively despite the challenges brought about by Covid -19. In 2023, the competition continued with a hybrid approach, incorporating both digital and face-to-face elements. The first three rounds followed a hybrid model of digital and face-to-face interaction, culminating in a thrilling face-to-face National final on 13 October in Johannesburg.

The top three students per province received R36 000, R18 000 and R9 000 respectively. At the National final, the top three learners received an additional R36 000, R18 000 and R9 000 respectively while also walking away with a bursary to the value of R 550 000 towards a three year undergraduate degree.

During both the Provincial finals and the National event the FPI assisted in the form of adjudicators.

We commend the FSCA on a fantastic event and we are extremely grateful to contribute in a small way to the success of the competition.
