As we approach the festive season, it’s a time for family, relaxation, and making memories. However, with all the joy and travel, we also face heightened risks around security and asset protection over this period. Here’s a practical checklist to help ensure your valuable possessions and hard-earned assets remain safe while you’re away or celebrating.

1. Confirm Your Short-Term Insurance is Up-to-Date

Start with a review of your short-term insurance cover. December is notorious for increased theft and accident claims; in fact, data from the South African Insurance Association (SAIA) shows that insurance claims spike by around 15% during this period. Take a moment to check that all your valuable items, especially any new purchases, are accurately reflected in your policy. Confirm your insured values, make sure cover limits are adequate, and double-check any exclusions for a home that is unoccupied or for items you’re taking with on holiday . This is particularly important for high-value items like electronics, jewellery, or personal belongings that travel with you.

Pro tip: Consider making a quick call to your insurer to confirm you’re covered for the items you’re bringing along and that those left behind are adequately protected – confirm that your security is also noted correctly and that you are covered in line with your requirements based on your situation.

2. Test Your Alarm System Before Heading Out

A reliable alarm system can deter potential break-ins, with Crime Stats SA noting that properties with active alarms are about 40% less likely to experience break-ins. Before you leave, check your alarm’s functionality, change any backup batteries if needed, and update your contact information with your security provider. If you’ll be away for an extended period, let your insurer know and make sure you have cover for the period you’re away.

Pro Tip: test your alarm. Set text notifications for arming and disarming if this is an option available to you. Make sure your back up system in also in order.

3. Service Your Car Before Hitting the Road

With about 60% of holiday travel occurring by car, according to the Automobile Association (AA), it’s crucial to ensure your vehicle is road-ready. Schedule a service to inspect essentials like the brakes, battery, and oil. Festive season accidents and breakdowns are often linked to poorly maintained vehicles, so this check can save you from unexpected (and often costly) delays. Be especially mindful if you’re traveling through rural or less serviced areas where help may be far.

Pro Tip: Have your roadside assist number on hand and your insurer or advisers details ready in case of emergency. Have record of your policy number and make sure to pack – and check – your emergency towing and tire change kit.

4. Tire Condition is Key to Safety

We often overlook our tires, but they’re fundamental to safe holiday travel. According to AA reports, worn-out tyres contribute to nearly 20% of holiday-related road accidents. Ensure your tyre tread depth is within safety limits and that there are no visible cracks or bulges. Confirm your spare tyre is in good condition, too—having it ready can prevent being stranded in an unfamiliar place.

Tip: For long journeys, check tyre pressure when the tyres are cool for a more accurate reading, as heat from the road can alter readings.

5. Secure Your High-Value Items Before Leaving

If you’re traveling, lock away high-value items like laptops, cameras, jewellery, or important documents. Consider renting a safe deposit box for items that are exceptionally valuable or find a secure storage facility for the time you’ll be away.

Pro Tip: Photograph valuable items and store the images securely. This documentation can make the claims process much smoother if needed as you’ll always need to provide proof of ownership. Be sure to include all serial numbers, IMEI numbers and other important fine print details that will help identify the item and prove ownership.

6. Guard Against Water and Fire Risks

Water damage and electrical fires can occur unexpectedly, especially if you’re away for days at a time. SAIA data shows that water damage claims typically increase by 25% over the holiday period. Before leaving, turn off your main water valve and unplug unnecessary appliances. These simple steps help avoid potential floods or fire risks and may even reduce energy costs while you’re away.

Quick reminder: Disconnecting high-energy appliances can also prevent power surges, protecting your devices from damage.

7. Notify a Neighbour of Your Travel Plans or find a reputable house sitter

Letting a trusted neighbour know you’ll be away could be your most cost-effective security strategy. SAPS notes that neighbourhoods with vigilant residents see up to 30% fewer break-ins. Ask them to keep an eye on your property and alert you to any suspicious activity. In addition, pause your deliveries and have packages redirected, as unattended deliveries are a tell-tale sign of an unoccupied home.

By taking these small steps, you’ll not only improve your peace of mind but also increase the chances of a smooth and secure festive season. An updated insurance policy and a few preventative measures can make a big difference.

Enjoy the holiday season with confidence, knowing your valuables (and your January) are protected. Here’s to a secure and happy festive season for you and your loved ones!
